Running a side hustle alongside your day job?
Rideshare driving, online selling, content creation, freelancing, market stalls — if you're earning money outside your regular wage, it usually needs to be reported, and there's a specific set of things worth getting right from the start: whether it's a hobby or a business, whether you need an ABN, and what you can actually claim.
We've put together a dedicated guide for exactly this situation.
Read our Micro Business guideA few other things that can affect your return
Some things are not income or deductions themselves, but still change how your return is prepared — whether you have private hospital cover, how many dependents you have, whether you have a spouse (their income can matter for some offsets), and whether you have a HELP debt.
If you've paid child support, have a Centrelink or child support debt, or have had an ATO audit before, let us know too — none of it changes how we treat you, it just means we prepare things with the full picture in mind.
What to bring to your appointment
Photo ID, your Tax File Number and bank details for your refund. Beyond that, bring your income statements, receipts for anything you think might be deductible, and a depreciation schedule if you had one prepared last year.
Not sure if something counts? Bring it anyway — it's easier for us to leave something out than to chase it down later.
Individual tax return questions
How much does it cost?
Standard returns start at $165. Investor and sole trader returns vary based on complexity — the more income sources and deductions involved, the more time it takes to get right.
What can I claim?
Work-related expenses, tools, uniforms, self-education and donations are common ones, but what applies depends on your job and circumstances. Bring us what you spent and we'll identify what's eligible.
I have several years of overdue returns — can you help?
Yes. We can lodge multiple overdue returns and help you deal with any penalties along the way. Getting started is the hardest part — contact us and we'll take it from there.
I have a side hustle as well as my regular job — is that a problem?
Not at all — it's very common. It just needs to be reported alongside your other income. See our Micro Business guide for what that involves, or bring the details to your appointment and we'll sort it out together.
Do I need a Tax File Number and Medicare card?
Your Tax File Number is essential for lodging your return. Your Medicare card details help determine your Medicare Levy position, including any exemptions that might apply.
